Crossfire Delivers Critical Fire Protection at Belfast's New Grand Central Station

Belfast's transformative Grand Central Station represents a pivotal moment in Northern Ireland's transportation evolution, and Crossfire is proud to have contributed our specialised passive fire protection expertise to this landmark project that will reshape how people travel across Ireland.
Key Project Statistics:
  • Total Investment: £340 million
  • Construction Period: February 2022 - September 2024 (4+ years)
  • Main Contractor: Farrans Sacyr Joint Venture
  • Project Milestone: Over 1 million construction hours completed without a health and safety incident
  • Facilities: Integrated transport interchange with large station concourse, 26 bus stands, 8 railway platforms
  • Opening: Phase 1 opened September 8, 2024 (bus services), with full rail services following in October 2024

 

Crossfire's Scope of Works

Fire Stopping Services: Crossfire delivered comprehensive fire stopping solutions throughout the station complex, ensuring critical fire compartmentation between different areas of this high-traffic public facility. Our work included:
  • Service Penetration Sealing: Fire stopping of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing penetrations through fire-rated walls and floors
  • Linear Gap Sealing: Perimeter fire stopping around structural elements and building joints
  • Fire Blankets: Conceal void fire blankets were installed to prevent the spread of fire / smoke over large undivided spaces.
Intumescent Coating Applications: Our structural fire protection expertise was crucial for this major infrastructure project:
  • Steel Structure Protection: Application of intumescent coatings to structural steelwork throughout the station
  • Fire Rating Achievement: Ensuring all structural elements meet required fire resistance periods
  • Quality Assurance: Rigorous QA and documentation to meet stringent industry standards
